Outboard models
Varuna
and Joshua models
◄The
Varuna and Joshua models combine the simplicity of the
CapeHorn control mechanism, with a conventional installation mode, totally
outboard. This allows installation of a CapeHorn on yachts with outboard
rudders or in all cases when an installation through the hull is not practical (Joshua
is for 35' and up).
The mounting arms of the
Varuna
model are 1" (25 mm ) dia. tube. They are
18 5/8" (473 mm ) apart and 22" (560 mm ) long (standard). The diagonal braces
are 7/8" (22 mm ) dia. tube, 40" ( 1 m ) long.
The mounting arms of the Joshua model
are 1.66" (41 mm ) dia. tube. They are 21" (533 mm ) apart and 22" (560 mm )
long (standard). The standard diagonal braces supplied are 1" (25 mm ) dia.
tube, 60" ( 1,5 m ) long. Both models can be built with longer mounting arms and
diagonal braces if needed.►
Installation
◄Installation
of the outboard models is quite simple : it is only a matter of cutting the
mounting arms and diagonal braces to the proper length and fastening them to
the hull. Then the control lines are led to the wheel or tiller through
blocks in the manner described aabove. |
Length of the Mounting Arms
◄If
the rudder is raked aft, the mounting arms (and diagonal braces) are cut so that
the steering oar clears its trailing edge. If it is raked
forward, the gear should allow free movement of the rudder head. The fittings
supplied allow the mounting arms and diagonal braces to be mounted indifferently
on a deck, hull or transom.
Naturally, the Varuna or the Joshua
can be mounted directly to the transom
Height Above the Waterline
For optimum performance, the height of the mounting arms above the waterline
should be between:
Varuna : 20"-30"(50-75 cm)
Joshua : 30"-46" (75-115 cm)
If the mounting arms have to be placed higher, a longer steering oar is supplied.
Modified Varuna
or Joshua
 ◄►The
horizontal control axle of the Varuna or Joshua
can be made longer to place the steering oar at the end of an aft platform
while keeping the vertical windvane tower forward, against the transom. (In
this case, the mounting arms, no longer needed, are omitted.) The
horizontal axis is fastened to the platform through U-Shaped straps. If
needed, additional braces can be added. |
Toucana
◄►Toucana
is a hybrid between the two
models (Jean-du-Sud and Varuna), designed for
mounting under a boomkin (such as the Westsail 32). For larger yachts the
Toucana can be built with the scantlings of the Spray-Joshua.
